The knowledge base of all Science is growing in leaps and bounds. Theories have to be re written and some abandoned in the light of new evidence. The one thing that is certain is that mighty hand of the Creator is becoming more and more evident. More and more sceptics are realizing that creation cannot be explained as a number of random events that can be explained by a set of man made rules. There are just too many pointers in the detail that are increasingly pointing to a mighty Creator who is mightier and more unfathomable than we thought before.
Every day science astounds us with new facts. The divide between scientists who accept God as Creator and those who do not are widening. The arguments of the believers are growing in stature while the rest seem to be more and more muddled and confused. It is therefore also no coincidence that there are a far greater percentage of true Christians among scientists than in the general population. To me it is as if most of the world still refuses stubbornly to acknowledge all the evidence pointing to the Creator. May I share some recent and some older facts that are beseeching us to accept that there must be a great personality behind everything?
The speed of light and other properties of light are difficult to get your head around. And God spoke and it was created. The speed of light is not absolute as it is affected by the medium through which it moves. In a vacuum the speed of light is measured at 299 792 458 meters per second or 1 079 252 848.8 kilometres per hour. To the speed freaks out there – try and beat that! In a year light will travel 9 460 000 000 000 km or 9.46 X 1012 km and we call that a light year. The distance of a star measured in light years is not an exact science. The gasses the light travels through as well as the bending of that light by the gravity of heavenly bodies will influence the measurement slightly from moment to moment. It takes many years for the light of stars to reach us. The galaxies we can see outside our own galaxy which we call the Milky Way Galaxy, are millions of kilometres away and what we see today is in fact a picture of long ago. Some new galaxies that have formed are out there unseen and their light must still reach us.
The closest star is Sirius which is 8.6 light years away. Don’t be fooled – 8.6 light years is 81 356 000 000 000 km from us. My calculator tells me it would take us 92 872 146.118 years travelling at 100km per hour to get there. The vast distances make the speed of light seam slow.
Here on earth it is a different matter. We use that speed to eliminate the delay of sending information along copper cables. Fibre optic cables have done that for us. Theoretically it should take a beam of light only 0.0668 seconds to travel halfway around the world. In reality the information we send this way has to pass through routers and switches. In 2004 the time it took for a message to travel between a computer in Japan and one in the USA was measured. They used a “Ping” which is often used in the computer world to test if two computers are in communication with each other. It only took an incredible 0.18 seconds for the signal to travel between the two computers.
Recently experiments allowed laser beams to travel 300 times the speed of light for very short bursts. Now that is speed for you.
A current project in Europe is truly mind boggling. On the border between France and Switzerland there is a massive underground accelerator circuit that is used to send atomic sized particles around a circle at incredible speeds and then monitoring the collisions of these particles. The circuit has been increased to 17 miles. The cost was hundreds of billions of dollars and scientists from over 50 countries are working there. They want to establish the smallest particles of matter as predicted to exist by scientists like Prof. Dr. Stephen William Hawking, CH, CBE, FRS, FRSA. Recently the first experiment was completed. Scientists have less than a millionth of a billionth of a second to measure the collision. Astonishing.
To argue that a complicated world such as we live in happened by chance does not make sense. In fact even Stephen Hawking, arguably the greatest theoretical physicist of all time, admits that there is a Creator God. He has not yet given his views on the Bible and Jesus and we must assume that he is not a Christian. He made this statement after some indications that his former wife - who is a Christian – said he was an atheist. He said this was untrue and he wanted to correct that statement.
The NASA shuttle project is coming to an end and the new project is first to get manned missions back to the moon and from there to Mars.
Just another interesting fact. The computers on the Apollo moon missions were only as powerful as the cell phone on your desk. Scary if you think about it. Two companies – one of them Virgin - are developing space travel vehicles that will allow you to buy a ticket to space. The projects are far advanced and bookings are already being made.
Another interesting thought is how Columbus discovered the Americas by accident using really primitive navigation tools. These days even kids will have difficulty getting lost with “GPS”. Despite all these wonderful advances in science it does not make man feel superior. The more we discover and develop the greater is the realisation that we still know next to nothing. Once again pointing to the Creator behind it all.
It is as if science is screaming out to the world to consider the incredible facts available about the creation and pointing to the Creator God. Most of the most sceptical of the great scientists at least admit the existence of God even if they will not go so far as worshipping him. Every day though the percentage of scientists that are Christians are growing because they work with these facts on a daily basis. Sadly the totally committed followers of Jesus remain small in number. Jesus himself warned of this. In Luke 16 verse 19 to 31 he tells us that even if dead relatives of some people had to visit them miraculously - they will refuse to believe. The incident of the rich man and Lazarus refers. It seems as if Jesus was more than correct with the facts. Today there is an incredible amount of evidence pointing people to God and still they try to avoid the unavoidable. They do not realize that you can postpone your appointment with God but you can never avoid it.
Many people today say they are seekers after God. Without sounding sarcastic it seems that they are more obsessed with searching than finding. By admitting that God exists or to say I believe there is a God just will not cut it. It is just not good enough. That is like admitting the existence of water and that it is wet, without experiencing it. Once you have tasted water and felt it run down your parched throat. Once you have revived a tired body with a warm shower or bath. Once you have seen how water washes dirt off. Your hands – YES – then you can say now I know water. How can you ever claim to know anything of God if you keep dancing around the issue without a relationship with him? When you decide to submit to a relationship with God it changes the whole thing. It brings the peace, rest and confidence to make sense of the seemingly chaotic universe we live in. We realize it only seems chaotic because we cannot see the big picture. In fact I believe the following statement to be as true as if it was in the Bible itself. Accept God and all he teaches about himself and everything makes sense. Reject God and nothing makes sense. What astounds me is that modern man with all the evidence at hand remains mostly stubborn. It makes greater sense that the majority of the uneducated and simple people of the Middle Ages were unbelievers. To admit the same thing in this modern era is beyond reason.
Isaiah 66:1-2
The LORD says, "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house, then, could you build for me, what kind of place for me to live in? I myself created the whole universe! I am pleased with those who are humble and repentant, who fear me and obey me.
Psalm 139:7-10 (Read the whole Psalm)
Your knowledge of me is too deep; it is beyond my understanding. Where could I go to escape from you? Where could I get away from your presence? If I went up to heaven, you would be there; if I lay down in the world of the dead, you would be there. If I flew away beyond the east or lived in the farthest place in the west, you would be there to lead me, you would be there to help me. (Good News Bible)
Psalm 19:1-4
(A psalm by David for the music leader.) The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes into all the earth, their words to the end of the world. (NIV)
